Term 2

Term Two: Week One

 

This week we have been thinking about our new Big Question - 'Who Inspires You?'

 We have been learning all about The Aspinall Foundation and the inspirational work that they do to protect and care for endangered species. We have also been thinking about who inspires us personally and why. We have created some fantastic pieces of art and discussed how lucky we are to be surrounded by so many inspirational characters! 

On Thursday, we had a fantastic drama afternoon with Ian from KIC theatre. We had lots of super activities to do as a class, exploring what has inspired our hopes, dreams and aspirations. 

This term we are exploring dance in our PE lessons, we took our dance lesson outside (just before it gets far too cold!) and had lots of fun. 

 

 

 

Term Two: Week Two

 

In maths this term we have been learning about factors and multiples. This week we started to look specifically at prime and square numbers. We consolidated our understanding of these by designing and making our own maths board games. Pupils thought carefully about the mathematical structures of their games and enjoyed challenging one another when they came to the playing stage. 

We explored the work of artist Olga Shvartsur for our art focus this week. We considered the way that we could use watercolours to create a similar effect to her rainbow safari animals. We had a go at creating our own versions that turned out very well! 

On Thursday, we had our prayer morning led by Year 6 for prayer week. We enjoyed visiting the different prayer stations and our learning inspired some fantastic discussions in regard to our school values. 

Term Two: Week Three

 

This week we have been showing off our fantastic poetry skills, writing our own version of Shel Silverstein's 'If the World Was Crazy'. We applied our learning about figurative language and structure to our poetry writing and we are very proud of the amazing work that we produced.

Later in the week we worked together to perform our poetry on camera, using intonation and expression to give meaning. 

On Friday, we learned about Children in Need and how fundraising can be inspirational. We started to consider how we can be inspirational as individuals. We created superhero versions of ourselves, celebrating all of our awesome 'superpowers'. We used collage and colour to enhance our artwork. 

It turns out that Year 5 are a very super bunch of children! :) 

Term Two: Week Four

 

This week we have been learning more about endangered animals around the world and how their habitat is changing. We have been learning about the small things that we can do to make a difference. We created some super posters to help spread the word! 

 

We have also been working really hard this week on creating our class value board.

We worked together as a class to create a fantastic piece that we are really proud of. We can't wait to see it up on display!

Term Two: Week Five

 

This week we finished our class value board! We worked really hard on this giant collage as a class and we are very proud of it. Thank you everyone for your hard work, especially those of you that decided to help Miss Lawless during play time! 

 

In our English lessons, we have been learning about narrative poetry. As a class, we read and analysed Edward Lear's 'The Owl and the Pussycat'. We considered how we could use this poetic style to write our own versions of narrative poetry.

Year 5 thought of some wonderful ideas such as 'The Frog and the Megladon' (Robbie) and 'The Pug and the Unicorn (Olive) - and lots more! 

 

In science we have been learning about living things and their habitats, focusing on endangered animals around the world. Isaac tested all of our animal knowledge with a tricky quiz that was enjoyed by everybody. Jasmine also decided to test the class with some complex riddles!

 

Term Two: Week Six

 

We have been learning about 'The Highwayman' by Alfred Noyes this week in our English lessons. We have analysed the text in detail, considering how characters and settings have been developed in the narrative poem. We had lots of fun hot seating the character of Bess, using our ideas to inform some fantastic diary entries. 

 

We have been learning about short division in our maths lessons. We were able to apply our learning of this method to some problem solving activities that we completed by working together in pairs.

 

Christmas has officially begun in Year 5! Our tree is up, our calendar is open and our 'elf selves' are hanging up on our door! It's the most wonderful time of the year! 

Term Two: Week Seven

 

It's been a busy week in Aspinall Class!

On Tuesday we were very lucky to have Mr. King from The Aspinall Foundation come in to talk to us about some of the conservation work he has been involved in around the world. We had lots of questions to asked him and really enjoyed the afternoon with him. 

We have also been busy with Christmas activities and loved going to watch the KS1 performance on Wednesday. 

On Thursday, we enjoyed our class treat for collecting all of our puzzle pieces. The class enjoyed a pyjama party watching a Christmas film together.
