Multiplication & Division
We have begun to explore the area of Multiplication in Term 2. We have looked at the vocabulary associated with multiplication such as times, lots of, groups of, repeated addition and product, as well as learning that multiplication is 'commutative' (can be done in any order).
Knowledge and recall of times tables is key to calculating the answers to multiplication facts, but we firstly started to explore this area of Maths by looking at arrays. From different arrays, we wrote the multiplication facts and the repeated additions. For example: 3 x 4 = 12 but 4 x 3 = 12 also. The repeated addition would be: 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 or 4 + 4 + 4.
The next step has been to learn the grid method multiplication so that children can begin to multiply larger numbers. At this stage we stick with smaller 2 digit numbers and multiply by a single digit number. Have a look at the Powerpoint to see how it works.
