Week 1 term 1

This week was short but we got a lot done in our 1st week back! We have begun our new Maths topic on place value and looked at numbers to 10 million. In English we have created dream catcher poems, developing stanzas with both negative and positive ideas! In P.E we have had tag rugby and as Venture weren't in on Friday, we had a fun team building session (see the pictures!) We have also created Reading Rivers to show our learning journey up to year 6. We started our Samba sessions in Music and in VIPERS we started our story, the Nightbus Hero. We had a special guest (Miss Whelan) who came and talked to us about her prior work as a zoo keeper (to link with our upcoming 'Living Things' Science topic). What a busy first week! Well done Year 6 for getting involved and being great role models already for the rest of the school!

Week 2 term 1

This week was a busy one - with children either sitting the Kent Test or being amazing role-models in Year 2 and Year 3, helping out! In English this week we created new dream poems, applying our knowledge of collective and abstract nouns. In Maths we continued our place value topic including rounding numbers. In Art we created double page spreads all about artists linked to activism including Shepard Fairey. In P.E we continued our tag rugby and on Friday the children had their 1st basketball session with Venture. We carried on with our Samba in Music and in Geography we used our atlas skills for our U.K topic.

Week 3 term 1

This week we began our new narrative topic in English, looking at stories with flashbacks. Our calculation topic in Maths this week included addition, subtraction, long multiplication and short division (long next week!) In Geography we identified major U.K cities using atlases and Google Earth and in Science we created dichotomous keys in pairs. In French we named things in towns and in P.E we continued with basketball and tag rugby. In Art we started our base layer of our activism ideas, collaging (and getting a bit messy!) In Computing we thought about communication and in RE we continued with our Islam topic, linking to the 5 pillars.

Week 4 term 1

This week has flown by in Year 6! We have begun to write our flashback stories based on dreams and spent a lot of time on looking at long multiplication and the DMSB method for long division - amazing perseverance Year 6! In PE we have continued with tag rugby with a different pair each week leading the warm-up! It is great to see the children lead the class! In Science we picked favourite animals and used the Linnaean System to classify them - finding interesting similarities and differences between animals. In French we learnt directions and in Music we have taken a short break from our Samba to rehearse our Harvest song! In Geography we researched different physical features in the U.K and in Computing had a go at collaboration including changing Scratch designs. In R.E we looked at different mosques and this week we also started painting over our collages to create a base for our printing next week.

This week we have also been trying out the new sensory pathway outside the classroom!

Week 5 term 1

This week we started our PiXL assessment - the children have worked so hard and have chosen strategies/ conditions that work best for them in a test environment. In English, we planned our final flashback stories - now developing more independence! In Science we looked at micro-organisms and have set up a mould investigation - there are currently lots of slices of bread in various places around the school!!! In Art we created stencils for our prints and in Geography we investigated human features in the UK. A huge congratulations this week for everyone who gave the House Captain elections a go! Remember that Year 6 has lots of roles and responsibilities throughout the year so please don't be disheartened if you just missed out - results were very close!!! Also, a huge well done to Year 6 for performing an amazing Harvest Paradise rap! 

Week 6 term 1

This week we looked at strategies such as BIDMAS and used known facts to help support us. In English we finished writing our own flashback stories and edited them. In Science we investigated the link between animals and their habitats. In Art we had a go at printing using silkscreens to help us. We came up with impactful slogans to go over the top of our collages. In P.E as it was raining we went in the hall but still had lots of fun! In Music we swapped instruments for our Samba and came up with new phrases for call and response. This week we also celebrated the Micro:bits birthday with a coding session!

Week 7 term 1

This week we looked at square, cube and prime numbers as well as rules for divisibility. In English we began our persuasive writing topic, inspired by Marin Luther King Jr and wrote our own 'I have a dream' messages. In Science we investigated the link between plants and their habitat - whilst still checking our mould! In Art, inspied by our Black History Month hero choices, we created portraits. In Geography we discussed how human features can impact the environment and the impact of a growing population. On Wednesday afternoon, Year 6 were amazing role-models, setting up a well-being afternoon to celebrate Saturday's mental health day. Activities included storytelling, breathing beads, art and P.E activities. This week we also had an amazing theatre company visit the school and Year 6 were lucky enough to have a backstage experience!
