Term 1
Week Six
This week in phonics we have been learning the /igh/ written as 'i-e' and 'y'. In English, we have been reading 'All Are Welcome' by Alexandra Penfold & Suzanne Kaufman. We have been writing sentences about the story, matching rhyming words, and writing about the things that we do to make everyone feel welcome in our classroom.
In maths, we have been learning to find number bonds within 10, using numicon and double-sided counters to work systematically. We enjoyed multi-skills in P.E, some exciting music, and continuing to develop our 'click and drag' skills in computing. We read the story 'Jesus Loves Everyone' in R.E and considered why it's such a special message for Christians.
In art this week, we painted like Matisse, using bright and bold colours like he uses in his leaf art. We also created hedgehog leaf art, using autumn leaves we collected from outside!
We learned about warm colours and chose our leaves carefully. Hedgehogs were very proud of their work! 😊
We finished the week with a lovely well-being afternoon arranged by Year 6 for World Mental Health Day. Children enjoyed yoga, dance, singing, story time and more.
Have a super weekend and see you on Monday for the last week of term! 😊

Week Five
This week in phonics, we have been learning /ee/ written as 'ie', 'ey', 'y', and target phoneme /igh/ written as 'ie'. In English, we completed our Funny Bones stories and made our own front covers. We hope you enjoyed reading them at home!
This week in maths has been all about addition! We have been using part-whole models and writing our own number sentences. We have been finding fact-families and learning to read models in different ways.
In geography, we collected data about how our friends travel to school. We used this to create our own pictograms!
We created Henri Matisse inspired creatures in art using collage materials and a lot of imagination! We learned about our sense of smell in science, and conducted our own smell test. The mustard didn't go down well!
We continued to develop our mouse skills in computing, worked hard in our music lesson, and discussed what it means to be proud in Jigsaw this week. We also had lots of fun in P.E playing arena ball with Venture Sports.
Art: Can I create a Matisse inspired creature? 🐌
Science: What can we smell? 👃
Week Four
This week in phonics, we have been learning /ai/ written as 'eigh', 'ey', 'ei', /ee/ written as 'ea' and /ee/ written as 'e-e'. In English, we have been re-telling the story of Funny Bones! They are looking great and we've done really well with remembering our full stops and capital letters. We look forward to finishing them off next week! We started handwriting this week too and are off to an awesome start! :)
We have been busy in maths comparing numbers to 10, and even using maths symbols (<, > and =) to compare. We have also been ordering objects and numbers, and building our own number lines to help us count forwards and backwards.
We learned about 'aerial maps' in geography this week and enjoyed creating our own maps of the school from a birds eye view.
In science, we learned about our sense of hearing and went on an exciting sound walk around the school and the woods.
We had fun in P.E this week and worked hard on our bouncing and rolling skills. We continued our mouse work in computing and enjoyed R.E with Mr. Day to learn about God as a parent, and why this is important for many Christians. On Friday, we visited the church for our Harvest assembly - a great way to end the week!
Maths: Can I compare numbers? Can I make my own number line to help me?
Venture Sports: Ball skills... 🏀
Week Three
This week we have been learning the 'ay' and 'a-e' sounds in phonics. We have been reading 'Funny Bones' in English - writing simple sentences, recalling characters and creating amazing story maps.
In maths, we have been counting backwards, finding one less, comparing groups by matching and identifying fewer or more.
We built some super 'messy maps' of our classroom in geography, and had fun 'drawing with scissors' like Henri Matisse to make some brilliant collages. We learned about our eyes in science and enjoyed using the magnifying glasses!
In Jigsaw, we learned about how to make everyone feel welcome in our classroom. We had our first computing lesson on Thursday, and lots of fun with Venture Sports on Friday. We finished a busy week with some busy learning time.
Have a super weekend everybody!

In maths, we have been representing objects, using numbers as words, and 'counting on' in different ways.
We had our first ever geography lesson - learning all about where we live and learn. We learned how to build an address, and to talk about places that are near or far away. We enjoyed P.E this week with Miss. Glenister and Venture Sports, and had fun in music introducing beat. We learned about our five senses in science, and looked at the story of 'The Lost Son' in R.E. We did some amazing self-portraits in art this week, inspired by artist Henri Matisse.
In our Jigsaw lesson, we spoke about how we have settled into our new class, and considered ways we can feel safe and special here. We finished Friday afternoon with some much-anticipated busy learning time.
What a busy week it's been, and Year One have been amazing!

Week One
Wow - one week down in Year One already! This week, we have got to know our new classroom and got used to having our own desk spaces and a tray which was very exciting! We are adjusting well to life in our new classroom and learning new routines.
In phonics this week, we have been revising our Phase 3 phonics sounds through games, songs and short writing tasks. In English, we have been writing simple sentences with description.
In maths, we have been sorting objects by size, shape and colour. We have also been revising our counting and representing numbers to 10 - getting used to working independently as a whole class. We've done an amazing job!
We have been reading every day and working really hard during guided reading sessions. We have enjoyed busy learning time in the afternoons and exploring our new classroom. Afternoon lessons will begin next week - exciting! Hedgehogs also enjoyed show-and-tell on Friday which was great and will continue every week.
All children should now have a reading record and reading book, and access to your Bug Club and Numbots logins.
Some tired children by the end of today definitely ready for the weekend! See you next week! :)
