Autumn 1, 2021

Dear Parents,

Welcome to the start of Year 2 after a not so summery Summer holiday! We hope you all had a wonderful time with family and friends. The Year 2 team this year is made up of myself, Mrs Shields who will be with us all day and Mrs Mumford who will be supporting us in the mornings. Mrs Shields will also be covering PPA on a Wednesday afternoon. We are looking forward to working with you and your children in ‘Badger Class’ this year.

Our ‘Big Question’ is ‘Where in the World are we?’ The questions that we will be exploring this term can be found on our class page on the website. In English we are going to be using stories to stimulate creative writing activities. We will also be creating our own poems based on originals and we will be focusing on handwriting and punctuation. In Maths we will be developing our number, place value and calculation skills, in particular this term, those involving addition and subtraction. In Science this term we will be investigating plants and animals in their habitats. During RE, we will be learning about Creation and celebrating harvest. In Geography we will be focusing on maps and geographical features. We will be using ICT to facilitate our learning across the curriculum and we will be learning how to stay safe online.

PE days this term are Tuesday and Friday. Your child will require their named PE kit consisting of shorts, a T-shirt and either plimsolls or trainers. Because we would like to be outside as much as possible, please ensure your child has warmer clothes too such as jogging bottoms, a long-sleeved top and a waterproof jacket. We will need PE kits to stay in school all term.  We will be changing reading books throughout the week so please ensure your child’s reading book is in their book bag every day and remember to sign the reading record booklet once you have listened to your child read. You may also add any messages you may wish to convey in their contact book.

Homework activities will have specific focuses and will be communicated via our newsletter and on our webpage. Spelling tests will start in Term 2; spellings will be stuck in the reading record book each week with the spelling test on the following Wednesday. If you have any queries please feel free to catch us at the end of the day or email us through the office:

We hope that we all have a happy and successful term!

Regards and best wishes

Mrs Cox, Mrs Shields and Mrs Mumford
