Term 3
Week Six
This week in English we have been writing invitations to Gerald's dance party, inspired by the story 'Giraffe's Can't Dance'. In maths, we have been learning how to double numbers and how to calculate near doubles too! We learned about polar animals in science this week, and more about the Arctic and Antarctic in geography. We had great fun making polar bears and penguins in art, and made sliding mechanisms in D.T to create moving animals! We enjoyed playing the glockenspiel in music and finding the beat of different songs. In computing, we completed our learning about buttons and programming and even made our bee-bots dance! We also did some amazing dancing of our own in P.E - see the video below!
We earned all of our hedgehogs and headed to the park on Friday afternoon for a cookie party! Excitement levels were high and we had a brilliant time with our friends!
Have a super half term everybody! See you soon!
Art: Creating animal art, just like Romero Britto!
P.E: Animal dancing!
Music: Can I play along to the beat?
Maths: What does it mean to double? Can I find near doubles?
Hedgehogs class treat... cookies at the park!
Week Five
At the beginning of this week we enjoyed sharing our versions of 'The Three Little Pigs' with our friends. We have moved on in English to learn the difference between fiction and non-fiction texts - we're getting very good at explaining the difference! We have been naming the different parts of a report and have learned what headings and sub-headings are. We have chosen our own animals and started to write our very own report about them!
In maths this week, we have been learning our number bonds to 20 and how we can use these to solve additions. We have also learned all about doubling numbers.
In science this week, we learned about the diets of different animals and identified different carnivores, herbivores and omnivores! In geography this week we learned about hot and cold countries around the world and the invisible line we call the equator! In music, we learned to find the beat to a new song called 'Sparkle' and in art we were using symmetry to print like Romero Britto! In our Jigsaw learning this week we learned about obstacles and challenges with Miss Glenister, acting out a story about a penguin who doesn't give up! In computing, we learned all about 'debugging!' We had to debug our bee-bots by programming them correctly and helping them to find their way.
I can't believe next week is the final week of term - time flies in Hedgehogs class! Have a lovely weekend!
Story-telling our versions of 'The Three Little Pigs' with our friends...
Art: Can I use symmetry to print like Romero Britto?
English: What is non-fiction? Can I find headings and sub-headings in an animal report?
Week Four
This week we in our writing lessons we have written our very own versions of The Three Little Pigs! We have worked really hard on these and come up with some amazing alternative characters! We've created big bad sharks, monkeys, snakes and more! Hedgehogs have also started their journey to joined writing! We are currently mastering our 'long ladder' letters, starting with the 'l' in our handwriting books.
In maths this week, we have been learning to estimate on a number line! We've also been comparing and ordering numbers to 20, using our crocodile symbols which we are SO good at now!
We started the week with a fun athletics session from Josh Kennedy, we also enjoyed dancing like monkeys with Miss Tree on Thursday in P.E. In geography, we've been learning about journey lines and how we can travel to places near and far away. We had great fun in music, learning a new song about a dragon and adding some instruments to find the beat - maracas and tambourines! What a treat for our ears that was on Wednesday afternoon!
Art was also great fun this week! We were using potatoes to print in the style of Romero Britto, and creating crayon rubbings with different materials. We learned all about resilience with Miss Glenister in our Jigsaw lesson this week and showed perseverance when working towards a goal. On Friday, we learned to direct our bee-bots to make a full turn and continued working on our mouse control with a maths and phonics game.
Art: Can I print in the style of Romero Britto?
P.E: Monkey dancing with Miss Tree and athletics with Josh Kennedy!
Music: Can we find the beat?
Computing: Can I follow directions to make my bee-bot turn?
Week Three
This week in our writing lessons we have been working on a 'wanted' poster for the big bad wolf! We came up with lots of describing words for him and have been working really hard on our sentence structure - remembering our full stops and capital letters. In maths, we have been learning about the place value of numbers to 20 - representing numbers in different ways and completing number tracks using our knowledge of 'one more' and 'one less'.
In geography this week we learned more about what a globe is and how this is different to a world map. We played a 'pass the parcel' game with an inflatable globe and were VERY impressive with our globe quizzing if the globe landed on us! We used a key to represent land and water on a globe of our own.
In R.E, we learned more about Jesus' teachings and considered what peace and forgiveness means to us. We compared different animal groups in science and remembered so much of our learning from last week. Year 1 were amazed to know that humans are animals too - deciding that we are special mammals!
We made some piggy collages in art, using bold colours in the style of Romero Britto which were fantastic! In P.S.H.E with Miss Glenister, we considered the importance of teamwork and how working together can achieve success for more than one person. In P.E, we were dancing like snakes and impressed Miss Tree with our groovy slithering moves! We finished the week learning how to move our bee-bots forwards and backwards in computing, directing our partners from one image to another.
Show and Tell Fun!
Week Two
This week in maths we have been learning all about place value to 20! In English, we have been reading the story of 'The Three Little Pigs', describing characters and role-playing events from the text.
In science, we worked together to group animals as mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish, insects and birds! In geography, we learned about world maps - solving puzzles and flying animals all around the world! We learned about the story of 'The Good Samaritan' in R.E with Miss Tree and had a brilliant music lesson too! We've been using oil pastels in art, working in the style of Romero Britto.
We have been dancing like hippos in P.E this week and really enjoyed showing off our routines to our friends! We had a great Jigsaw lesson and enjoyed computing on Friday morning. We have been learning to 'make and follow directions' this week and put this in action with our bee-bot programming and peg-board animals! We've also been working on our mouse control and are really growing in confidence using the notebook computers now!
Another brilliant and busy week of learning hedgehogs - well done!

Week One
What a brilliant start to 2023 it's been in Hedgehogs class! Year One have been working so hard this week, they have come back to school smiling and ready to learn! This term our Big Question is: If I were an animal, what would I be?
We have been learning different ways to make the 'ur' sound in phonics this week including 'ir' and 'er'. In English, we have been looking at the poem 'Animal Chatter' by Judith Nicholls. We used work banks to complete her animal sounds, then we planned and wrote our own version of the poem! They were amazing!
In maths, we have been learning the difference between 2D and 3D shapes. We can name lots of different shapes and talk about their properties! We enjoyed completing shape patterns on the notebooks too!
In art this week we have been learning about the animal inspired artist Romero Britto. We created patterns in his style and painted some beautiful fish with lots of colour. In P.S.H.E with Miss Glenister, we thought about our dreams and goals. We played a fun treasure game and made our own treasure chest full of dreams. We were so good this afternoon that we earned a hedgehog!
We have been programming bee-bots in computing - making and following directions. We have also been working on our typing skills with a phonics game - typing words to match sounds and pictures.
We have been kind friends this week and have really improved our lining up for lunch skills! We were so good that we earned another hedgehog on Friday! Woohoo!
As if that wasn't enough excitement - we headed to the park on Friday afternoon with the rest of the school for the grand opening of the play park! Have a super weekend hedgehogs!
