Term 4
Week Six
Hedgehogs class have had lots of Easter fun this week! We had a great time at the Easter service on Tuesday morning at the church. It was lovely to see each year group perform something different to celebrate Easter time. You can watch our performance in the video below - feel free to sing and dance along!
In maths this week, we have been learning all about measuring. We have learned to measure length in centimetres using a ruler, how to use balance scales to measure mass and explored the difference between volume and capacity in a very fun (very wet) lesson too!
In English, we completed our 'Big Blue Train' stories which we are very proud of. We've also been doing some writing for purpose, drafting and writing an Easter card independently.
Thank you so much for the plastic bottles - we had an awesome time in D.T this week, designing and making boats that float. Year 1 really enjoyed testing out their designs in the water tray - which were all very successful indeed! We've also been learning about boats in history and how they have changed over time. In P.S.H.E with Miss Glenister, we learned about our amazing bodies and discussed how we can keep ourselves safe and healthy. We had an exciting visit on Thursday morning for a fun factory P.E session, and on Friday we enjoyed our infant agility lesson with Hi-5.
The Easter bunny paid us a very special visit on the last day of term and we enjoyed hunting for eggs around the classroom (thanks to the lovely Spring weather!) We also enjoyed completing our egg and spoon races and showed excellent sportsmanship with this - please find your child's metre total on a slip in their bag!
Have a super Easter holiday Hedgehogs and Hedgehog's family! See you in 2 weeks! :)
Our Easter Service Performance!
Maths: We have been learning to measure length, mass and volume!
D.T: Can I design and make a boat that floats?
Week Five
This week in maths we have been learning all about number neighbours, finding one more and one less of numbers all the way to 50. Towards the end of the week, we started our new unit all about measure. We learned to measure in cubes and to compare length using mathematical language.
In English this week, we have been reading 'The Big Blue Train' by Julia Jarman.
We have been writing our own adventure stories inspired by this book. We have been writing all about the places we would visit on a train and which animals we would find along the way, using our describing words to improve our sentences.
Year 1 completed an umbrella investigation in science this week, exploring which material would be the most waterproof to protect our hedgehog teddy! We made predictions and recorded our results. We tested out our umbrellas on some willing volunteers and had LOTS of fun doing this! In R.E, we have written some Easter prayers and considered what we are grateful for at this special time of year. In history, we learned about the Wright brothers and the first aeroplane 'The Wright Flyer'. We had a go at drawing our own and they were amazing! On Thursday, we had a rugby coach come to visit us and deliver a fantastic session to work on some tag rugby skills. In P.S.H.E with Miss Glenister, we learned about road safety and why it is so important.
We had fun at infant agility with Hi-5 on Friday and enjoyed our tag day for The Rainbow Centre - thank you for all the generous donations!
History: What did the first aeroplane look like?
P.E: Tag rugby!
Science: Umbrella investigation!
Week Four
This week in maths we have been counting in groups of tens and representing numbers to 50. In English, we have been writing our own labels for different modes of transport and doing some amazing writing for some very special cards that we created in art this week! In handwriting, we have learned the joined letters ‘p’ and ‘r’.
In R.E, we learned about why we have hot cross buns at Easter time and in history we learned about the inventor of the steam train, George Stephenson. We had an exciting visit from Wildwood on Tuesday and really enjoyed learning more about animals and their habitats. In computing, we were using the notebooks to create different groups and work on our typing skills using our phonics words.
We had great fun on Friday for Red Nose Day and enjoyed games, puzzles, jokes, quizzes and more in the classroom. A highlight for the children was the teacher catwalk in the afternoon organised by Year 6 which was lots of fun!
Lots of poorly hedgehogs this week - rest and recover this weekend and we hope to see you soon!
Our Wildwood Visit!
Week Three
This week in maths we have been working hard to represent numbers to 50 using dienes! We have been completing number tracks and explaining the number of tens and ones in different numbers. In English, we have been writing labels and explaining their function. We have learned new sounds in phonics - when the 'o' makes an 'u' sound (like 'some') and when the 'a' makes the 'p' sound (like wash)!
In our handwriting lessons we have been working on the joined letters 'k' and 'b'.
In science this week we were using describing words to discuss materials and their properties in a 'feely bag' activity. In R.E, we learned about The Last Supper and why it is an important story for Christians. In history, we have been learning about how cars have changed over time. We learned that they used to have two seats, three wheels, no seat-belts, and to the amazement of some children - no electric windows! We have been learning about local artist Shane Record in art this week and experimented with watercolour pencils to paint a lighthouse. We are looking forward to showing him our work and asking him some questions on Monday! In P.S.H.E with Miss Glenister we were talking about how we stay clean and healthy and in computing we were grouping data by selecting with our mouse! We had infant agility with Hi-5 for P.E on Friday and had great fun racing with our friends. We finished the week with busy learning and earned ourselves two hedgehogs for our amazing listening and behaviour - woohoo!
Busy Learning
Computing: Can I group by selecting?
Art: Can I create art like local artist Shane Record?
Maths: Can I represent and write numbers to 50?
Week Two (Book Week)
What a busy week it has been! We have celebrated book week at school and have had so much fun! Let's see if we can remember everything!...
This week, we have been learning to answer worded problems in maths, find the difference between objects and materials in science and what happened on Palm Sunday in R.E! In computing, we have been learning to count and group on the computer and working some more on our typing skills. In P.S.H.E with Miss Glenister we learned about healthy choices and in art we made some absolutely amazing collages of Mrs Large in the bath tub from the cover of the story 'Five Minutes Peace!' We finished the week with infant agility in P.E which was great fun.
We have been looking at LOTS of fantastic books and stories this week, but we have especially enjoyed reading stories by Jill Murphy and finding similarities between them. On Monday, we were joined by Year 4 and had great fun sharing stories with each other in the classroom. On Tuesday, we went for a really exciting trip to the library where we enjoyed a story time from the librarian and got to explore the library with our friends. On Wednesday, we got to hear stories from different teachers and on Thursday we had our amazing Jill Murphy drama workshop with Ian! Friday was especially exciting as we all dressed up and had so much fun with a special book day assembly, show and tell, busy learning and family reading!

Shared reading with Year 4...
Week One
This term we are learning all about how transport has changed over time! In history this week, we created a timeline to show which modes of transport were older and which were more modern. In science, we are learning all about materials and their properties. We felt different materials and were able to match them to their names. We have been learning about 'new life' in R.E and how Easter shows us so many signs of new life. We talked about how daffodils growing and lambs being born makes us feel, and why this is such a special time for Christians. In art, we created collage trains using various materials and working on our fine-motor skills when cutting. In computing this term, we are learning all about grouping data! We had fun this week playing some memory matching games! We enjoyed infant agility with Hi-5 and had great fun working on our reaction skills!
Year 1 have been learning to find the difference in maths this week and have made amazing progress! It was tricky at first, but we're doing so well now! In English, we have been doing some shared reading and having our first go at some comprehension questions.
Have a super weekend Hedgehogs! Book week next week which I'm sure will bring lots of fun!
