This week in maths we have been learning to write number sentences and identify fact families! We have been working really hard and completed some amazing number work. In English, we have been reading 'All Are Welcome' by Alexandra Penfold and Suzanne Kaufman. We have been identifying rhyming words, writing rhyming sentences and even completed a poem about our own class. In science, we learned about how we can help people who have a problem with one or more of their senses. We learned about a very special alphabet that uses our sense of touch! We even learned to write our own names in braille! In P.E we enjoyed some fun games of bench ball and in history we were sequencing events from our own life! In D&T on Thursday, we designed and made delicious fruit kebabs that we enjoyed for our snack! We also enjoyed some busy learning time in the afternoon to finish off our very first term in Year One - wow!

This week in maths we have been learning all about parts and wholes! We have learned how to use the part-whole model in different ways, using numbers and manipulatives. In phonics, we have been learning the phoneme /igh/ as 'i-e' and 'y' and applying this to our super sentence writing. In science, we enjoyed labelling the different parts of our bodies. In geography, we learned about modes of transport and created a frequency table to show how Year 1 travel to school. We used a map of our local area to direct different animal figures to and from school! We have been working on our typing skills in computing - we now know how to do a finger space and a new line, as well as locating letters on a keyboard. Year 1 enjoyed some colourful building work in art, creating structures using bright colours like Henri Matisse. We have had fun developing our ball skills with Mr. Day and Hi-5 in P.E this week. Year 1 have enjoyed lots of stories this week as part of Black History Month. Our favourite so far has been 'I am Perfectly Designed' by Karamo Brown.
This week in maths we have been comparing and ordering numbers! We have also been learning to use a number line to find missing numbers and to estimate values. In English, we have been working on our sentence structure - building super sentences linked to the story of Funnybones. We have been learning to use the /ee/ sound written as 'ie', 'ey', and 'y' in phonics.
In R.E we learned about the Jewish holiday Shabbat. In Science, we learned more about our sense of smell and identified different smells! In geography, we created maps of our school using symbols and keys. In art, we were 'drawing with scissors' just like Henri Matisse and creating some fantastic collages! We learned to use the keyboard in computing - typing the alphabet and some animal words! We enjoyed developing our dribbling and passing skills with Hi-5 this week and in P.S.H.E we spoke about the things that make us happy and proud!
We had a very special day on Thursday to say goodbye to Alex as he returns home. We said goodbye with a dinosaur party and it was brilliant to see the children read their thoughtful cards and letters to him. We wish him all the best and will really miss him, but hope to keep in contact!
This week in English, we have been reading the story of Funnybones by Janet & Allan Ahlberg. We have been using our amazing drama skills to act out different parts of the story. Can you spot any big, little, or doggy skeletons in the pictures..? In maths, we have been learning to compare values using symbols and revising our number bonds. We learned about our hearing sense in science and went on a secret-spy walk around the school to find lots of different sounds. In geography, we learned about aerial plans and created 'messy maps' for our classroom. We experimented with 'cubism' in the style of Henri Matisse in art with some colourful snails and in P.E we have been working on our throwing and catching skills! In music, we learned to find the pulse of music and paired this with some very impressive dance moves!
This week in maths we have been finding one less, comparing groups by matching and working on our number formation. In our phonics lessons we have been learning about the 'ay', 'ai' and 'a-e' sound. We have applied our phonics to some super sentence writing using our full stops and capital letters. We had our first geography lesson this week where we discussed our place in the world, thinking specifically about where we live and learn. We applied this learning to our 'school passports' and learned more about what makes an address and why we use them. In art this week we continued our learning about Henri Matisse, adding primary colours to his work by following a key! In P.S.H.E we discussed our 'rights and responsibilities' in keeping our classroom a safe and happy place. We also celebrated our KS1 Harvest Festival this week and performed our very special vegetable song - well done for your hard work vegetables!
This week we have been learning the 'wh' and 'ph' sound in phonics! We have been writing super sentences in English and joining clauses using 'and' and 'because'. In maths, we have been learning to recognise numbers as words, finding 'one more' and finding numbers by counting backwards. In science this week we learned about how our eyes work to give us sight. In R.E, we began learning about Judaism and what is precious to Jewish people. We considered what is precious to us and had some amazing ideas - teddies, family, friends, marbles, pets, mario-figures and more! We have been working on our ball skills in P.E and developed our bouncing technique with Hi-5. In computing, we worked on our mouse skills and discussed what technology is! We completed our self portraits this week in art by creating a colourful background in the style of Henri Matisse - they look wonderful! We thought about ourselves as learners with Mrs. Shields in P.S.H.E and in music we've been rehearsing our very special Harvest song! Have a super weekend Hedgehogs!
Wow! Our first full week in Year One has flown by! We have been getting used to our new classroom and settling back into our school routine. We have done daily phonics, writing and maths. In our English lessons we have been reading 'What Makes Me a Me?' by Ben Faulks and writing super sentences about ourselves. In maths, we have been sorting objects by colour, shape, size and type. We have also been working on our counting skills and learning how to represent numbers in different ways. We have been superstars at this!
In science, we have learned about our five senses and how our body works! We drew self portraits in the style of Henri Matisse in art and used the i-pads in our first computing lesson! We enjoyed our first PSHE lesson with Mrs Shields on Thursday afternoon and had a great time at our class trip on Friday to Howletts.
