Year 1 Hedgehogs Term 1 2026

Welcome to the start of Year 1! We hope you all had a wonderful time with family and friends over the Summer holidays. The Year 1 team this year is made up of myself and Mrs Cannell. Mrs Cannell will be covering PPA on a Thursday afternoon. We are looking forward to working with you and your children in ‘Hedgehog Class’ this year. 

Our ‘Big Question’ this term is ‘What makes me a me?’ In English, we are going to be using stories to stimulate creative writing activities. We will also be writing instructions and creating Autumn poems. A focus for us this term will be handwriting and sentence structure. In Maths, we will be developing our number and place value skills. In Science this term, our topic is ‘Humans and animals’. During RE, we will be learning about Creation and celebrating harvest. In Geography, we will be focusing on maps and geographical features. We will be using ICT to facilitate our learning across the curriculum and we will be learning how to stay safe online. In Art, we will use the work of Henri Matisse to inspire our creations. In PE, we will be developing our ball skills and agility. PE days are Monday and Friday. Please could your child bring in weatherproof clothing in a separate bag for wet Opal Play days.

Please try to listen to your child read as often as you can and record this in their yellow Reading Record Book. They can change their books as often as they need to. 

Every week there will be a newsletter on our webpage in the ‘Newsletter’ Folder. Please do try and read this as it will update you on some of the learning we have been doing in the week and inform you of any important notifications.
