Week 1 term 1
This week we were only back for 4 days but Year 6 have already demonstrated their ability to be fantastic role models for the school! We started the week creating Reading Rivers in English and problems in Maths, as well as setting personal targets in PSHE. In English we have started our free verse poetry unit, creating Dream Catcher poems and in Maths we have begun our place value topic. We had a tag rugby lesson and in art we created double page spreads about our artist Stephen Wiltshire (who can create metres of cityscapes from memory!) We also had a fun opportunity to visit the hall where we could pick some books to take home! Lots of choices were made - from penguin books to fact files to dictionaries!

Week 2 term 1
This week we continued with our place value topic and dream poetry sessions, applying our collective noun and abstract noun knowledge. We have created our own classification trees in Science, as well as continuing with tag rugby and also starting basketball with Venture Sports. Mr Day has begun teaching RE and we are continuing with our class read, The Nightbus Hero. This week was a busy one with the Kent Test for some... they showed amazing resilience and kept up a positive attitude all day! Those not sitting the test did a wonderful job in the younger years - they were fantastic role models! We finished the day with some K-Pop! To link with our Science topic of 'Living Things', Ms Whelan visited us with her eggs and skulls from her work in Australia - we learnt so much! We are so lucky to have such amazing staff at Lyminge with hidden interests and talents!

Week 3 term 1
This week we began to look at flashback stories including ones with a dream theme. We used flashback devices for a music video and created characterisations. In Maths, we revised our written methods for addition, subtraction and long multiplication. In Science, we used the computers to investigate animals and the Linnaean System.... keep ponds clean or frogs get sick! In Geography we used our atlases to locate different locations in the UK and in Music we looked at the different instruments that make up a Samba band. In art we began our perspective skills by creating a worm's eye view of a city scape!

Week 4 term 1
This week was a busy one - we rehearsed and performed our Harvest rap in the church - well done to the children who volunteered to write their own sections for the rap in their own time! Amazing! We began our division unit this week in Maths - we are gradually getting the hang of long division! In English we started writing our own take on a dream story with a flashback. In Art we created backdrops for our cityscapes by painting, etc and evaluated our work. In Music we used instruments for call and response for Samba patterns. In Science we set up our mould investigation, based on our own questions! Hopefully nobody throws the bread away!!!

Week 5 term 1
This week we had a busy week of testing and bikeability! Luckily the weather stayed fairly dry and all the children who took part gained both their level 1 and level 2 badges. In English, we created our own flashback stories and in Science this week we went on a hunt of the wildlife around the surrounding areas to make comparisons - as well as checking on our mouldy bread! In PE we have continued with tag rugby and the wet weather meant games with Venture in the hall! In French we practised our numbers 21-31, in Geography we identified major UK cities and in Music we came up with our own 'call and response' Samba ideas. In Art, we carried on with our cityscape theme and this time created city collages which we then ink and rollers for printing.

Week 6 term 1
This week Year 6 have continued with their Maths topic with the 4 operations and this week we looked at BIDMAS, using known facts, mental strategies and common factors. In English we have started our persuasive topic, creating our own 'I Have a Dream' speeches, inspired by Martin Luther King. In Art we have created pictures of our heroes as part of Black History Month and in Science we explored the outdoors, linking plants to their habitats. In Computing we collaborated, using Google Slides as pairs from across the room! In Geography we investigated major cities in the U.K and in French we learnt how to say the date in French, using our number, month and day knowledge. To finish the week, Year 6 put on a hugely successful well-being afternoon; they put on a carousel of activities for the whole school including dance, stories, art, P.E, yoga and singing! Well done Year 6!
