Term 4
Week Six
It's been a busy final week! We have been revising our phonics from this term, and completed Easter writing tasks, like our cards and Easter prayers. In maths, we have been continuing with our learning about measure. This week, we looked at mass, volume and capacity! The water play was the most exciting part!
We enjoyed a fun factory session with Shepway Sports Trust, and our final yoga lesson with Miss. Glenister in P.E.
We had great fun designing and making 'boats that float' in D.T, and worked really well as part of a team to work together and overcome problems. It was super exciting to see them float, and only one toppled over, but it didn't sink! So still got a round of applause from the children... but sideways! :D
Windsor Woods morning was lovely, the children enjoyed hunting for Easter coins left by the Easter bunny and playing with friends in the forest. We also had a brilliant craft afternoon, painting, drawing, cutting, sticking and more.
We had a special visitor for show and tell on Friday. Milly has never been read so many story books! It's Milly's first birthday tomorrow, so the children celebrated that with a game of musical statues with her!
We finished the week with busy learning with Owl class and Badgers class which was great fun.
Thanks children for your lovely wedding card in worship. I look forward to reading all your messages! I hope you all have a wonderful Easter holidays. See you next term!

Week Five
This week we completed our train adventure stories! They were really impressive and we enjoyed sharing them with our friends. In phonics, we have been learning the /ur/ as 'er', the /ur/ as 'ear', the 'ea' and the 'aw'. In maths, we have been learning all about measurement! We created our own zoo's, using a ruler to measure animals in centimeters as they arrived.
In history, we used what we have learned about the past to design a vehicle from the future! We had some awesome ideas and brought these to life with lego! We enjoyed yoga and kung-fu in P.E this week which was great fun.
In science, we experimented with materials to find and test the best umbrella out for poor teddy! We made predictions, then tested card, paper, foil and plastic to see which kept teddy the most dry!
R.E was yummy this week as we learned about hot cross buns at Easter time and what they represent. The best part for many of Year 1 was obviously finding out how they taste! We enjoyed computing at the end of the week, exploring our digital art tools and teaching each other what we had learned. We finished the week with busy learning on Friday afternoon.
Thank you for the donations of bottles and tubs for our boat-making on Monday. Any last minute donations of plastic recycling would be appreciated Monday morning! :)
Have a lovely, sunny weekend and a very special day on Sunday!

Week Four
This week in phonics we have been learning the 'e-e', ie', 'ue' and 'ew'! In English, we have been reading an adventure story called 'There's a Tiger on the Train!' We have been planning and starting to write our own versions of this story - they are sounding brilliant! We have been doing some number line to 50 work in maths, finding one more and one less, and working on our estimating skills (which means making a clever guess!)
In history, we learned about George Stephenson and the first steam train! We enjoyed P.E this week, calming and moving our bodies in yoga, and finding pathways in gymnastics. We learned about The Last Supper in R.E, and what this special meal represents for Christians.
We had fun testing materials in science this week, finding out whether different objects were transparent, opaque, waterproof
(or not!)
We also enjoyed developing our digital art and mouse skills in computing, and learned about medicine safety in Jigsaw. Everyone looked super in red on Friday to celebrate Red Nose Day, and Year One had loads of fun during Opal play and busy learning. Have a great weekend!
Week Three
This week in English we have been reading stories by Jill Murphy. We have been asking questions, making predictions, drawing story maps and using these to help us retell stories. We have been learning the 'a-e' and 'ph' sounds in phonics. We've been working hard on our handwriting this week, introducing our 'one-armed robot' family! In maths, we have been counting in groups of tens to identify and represent numbers to 50. We have found this tricky, but worked hard using manipulatives to help us to understand.
We learned about the Wright brothers in history, and had a go at drawing our own 'Wright Flyers'. We then had fun building our own versions using construction materials. In art, we worked in groups to create rainbow sponge paintings with plane silhouettes. In R.E, we learned about Palm Sunday and why it is such an important event for Christians. We enjoyed yoga and music with Miss. Glenister this week, and had great fun in computing creating digital art. We learned about staying clean and healthy in Jigsaw, and sorted materials and objects in science.
Art: Sponge painting rainbow planes! 🌈✈️
Maths: Counting in tens and ones to represent numbers to 50 in different ways!
Week Two
Year One have had a fabulous book week! All year groups have been reading the story 'Flotsam' by David Wiesner. We started the week with a beautiful morning in the woods, hunting for treasure that would give us clues about our story! We have been writing creatively and enjoyed exploring the book more each day. We particularly liked the page with the hot-air balloon pufferfish, which inspired some great artwork where we put our fine-motor skills to work! ✂️
We enjoyed our Kic theatre session with Ian which was all about 'playing and pretending' linked to our story. We also enjoyed shared reading with Year 4, family reading on Friday, and of course dress up day!
In maths, we have been working on our place value to 50 - reading, writing and representing numbers in different ways. We have learned the 'a-e' and 'ou' sounds in our phonics lessons, and enjoyed yoga and music with Miss. Glenister. In computing, we used our mouse skills to group objects and in Jigsaw we spoke about the importance of fruit and vegetables and how they keep us healthy.

Week One
Hedgehogs class have had a busy first week back! It's been great to get to know the children more this week, and to see them settle quickly into class with a new teacher.
In phonics this week, we have been exploring the 'ay', 'oy' and 'wh' sounds. We have been reading tricky words and doing some great independent writing in our phonics books. In English, we have been learning about labels! We have been writing our own labels, using our phonics to help us to spell the names of car and train parts independently. It was especially fun writing sticker labels of our own!
In maths, we have been learning all about related facts to write number sentences and find our fact-families. It was really tricky at first, but Year 1 made great progress and learned to use the multilink to represent their part-whole models and guide them to the answers.
This term we are learning all about transport through time! We learned about 'past' and 'present', and created a whole class timeline of our own to see how things have changed. We went back to 5000 years ago when wild horses were tamed, all the way to 43 years ago and the first flight of the space shuttle!
In art, we had great fun creating patterns by painting with cars! In computing we worked on our mouse skills by grouping objects. We identified and named different materials by investigation in science, discussed new life at Easter time in R.E, and ways to keep healthy in PSHE. We enjoyed yoga in P.E and music with Miss Glenister.
Book week next week! We will be starting the week on Monday (please see app message for details).
Have a super weekend hedgehogs!
