Term 5
Week Five
In phonics this week, we have been revising our phase 3, 4 & 5 sounds, and learning the /s/ and /z/ written as 'se'. We have been working hard on our joined writing and forming longer words using cursive.
In maths, we have been learning all about quarters! We have been identifying, finding and representing quarters of shapes and quantities.
In geography, we compared two cities (Nairobi and London), finding out what was similar and what was different. We created some amazing art this week, working in the style of Gakonga. We painted a wash background and drew our own family. They look awesome!
We were also busy in D.T this week, designing and making a Masaii necklace. We learned about the Masaii tribe, and what all of the different colours represent. We used pasta, pompoms and felt pens to make our own!
We enjoyed finishing our P.E unit with some fun games, and singing together in music this week. In science, we learned about how to stay safe in the summer time and in PSHE we spoke about being kind to ourselves.
We finished the week with our class treat to the park where lots of fun was had! We wish you all a lovely, happy half term and will see you soon for Term 6 - wow!

Week Four
This week in phonics we have been learning the /s/ written as 'c(e)', 'c(i)', 'c(y)', and /s/ written as 'sc' and 'st(l)'. In English, we have been reading 'I am Hungry' by Michael Rosen. We have been writing our own menus for the Hungry Squirrel Cafe, using describing words for our food. We played cafes and had a go at taking each others orders!
In maths, we began our new unit all about fractions. We have been learning to identify and find 'half' of shapes, objects and quantities.
In geography, we learned all about Kenya, and made amazing booklets with our found facts. We looked at the artist Gakonga in art, and experimented with drawing in his style. We had fun in P.E, working on 'team tactics', and music with Miss. Glenister.
In computing, we learned to format text with colour which was exciting!

Week Three
This week in phonics we have been learning the /c/ written as 'ck' and /c/ written as 'ch'.
In English, we have been learning all about postcards! We received a postcard from our teddy Hedgehog, who had been on an exciting trip to Kenya. We learned about the different parts, then wrote our own about an imaginary trip on safari.
In maths, we have been learning to group and share. It was tricky at times but we gave everything a good go and used counters to help us find equal groups by sharing.
We had an exciting rugby lesson with Shepway Sports Trust this week, learning how to pass and score. In geography, we compared two continents (Europe and Africa) and in R.E we learned about mezuzahs and what they mean within Jewish faith. We had a craft afternoon on VE day, making medals, wreaths and paper chains.
In P.E, we worked on our underarm throwing at a target, and enjoyed music with Miss. Glenister.
We learned all about people who help us in Jigsaw on Friday, and did some really impressive typing in computing!

Week Two
In phonics this week, we have been learning the /ear/ written as 'ere' and 'eer', and /air/ written as 'are' and 'ear' sounds. We have also been revising tricky words with 'c' and 'k'.
We continued our West-African tale, 'The Leopard's Drum', in English this week - writing from the perspective of a very boastful leopard! We have been including questions in our writing, and using describing words for detail.
We have been really busy in maths, learning about equal groups, making 'bigger' doubles, and making/using arrays. The cookie monster even paid us a visit and had us making arrays with tiny cookies - identifying rows and columns!
We had an exciting cricket lesson this week with Tom and enjoyed learning some new skills on a sunny day. In Geography, we learned all about human and physical geography with a sorting activity. Target throwing in P.E, and learning about Judaism in R.E.
We designed and painted houses in the style of Esther Mahlangu in art, and in science we took a trip to Windsor Woods to identify signs of spring.
In computing, we continued to work on our typing skills, writing longer sentences with a full-stop, and in PSHE we learned about friendship, and the qualities of a good friend.
We finished a busy week with some great show-and-tells, and cooled down with busy learning on a very hot Friday afternoon! Hope everyone enjoys the long bank holiday weekend. See you on Tuesday, Hedgehogs!

Week One
It's been a busy first week back! In phonics, we have been learning the 'o' and 'oe' sounds, as well as revising our phase 5 psuedo words. We are learning all about Africa this term, and started this off in English with a traditional tale from West-Africa, 'The Leopard's Drum'. We have been writing descriptive sentences about the characters in the story, working really hard on using our full stops and capital letters. We've been working really hard on our handwriting too!
In maths, we have been learning to count in 2s, 10s and 5s. We did a fantastic job, and persevered with the 5s which were trickiest for most of us.
We enjoyed P.E with Miss. Glenister, working on our throwing skills in a range of activities. We also started our music for this term, having fun with improvisation.
We learned about an artist from South Africa, Esther Mahlangu, in art. We had fun using shapes to experiment with creating patterns in her style.
We learned about the changing season in science, and started our new topic in PSHE on relationships. This week we spoke about 'family' and what it means to us. We discussed how all families look different, and that all are unique and special. In computing, we began working on our typing skills - writing short sentences about ourselves. We did an amazing job! We finished the week with busy learning and enjoyed OPAL play on the field.
